A Few Words:  Rooftop Movies, created by the same team that brings you Fringe World Festival, is an open-air cinema experience like no other. They’ve created a pop-up paradise in the centre of the city, complete with a deluxe retro fit-out and eclectic film program. The panoramic views from the beanbags of the Perth city skyline are awesome.

‘Going to the cinema is something that pretty much everyone is in to and we’ve design Rooftop Movies to be an inviting place that’s welcoming to anyone’ Rooftop Movies’ Program Manager, Jessica Darlow, told Perth Culture. ‘We’ve designed the space so that when people open the elevators on the top floor of the car park, they are transported to another place far away from Perth. The design is inspired by the vintage trailer parks of Palm Springs and a hint of Mexico. Escapism is big part of the appeal of the place.’

Perth has absolutely fallen in love with the concept, escaping the typical cinema venues in favour of a Summer night out under the stars. ‘Every year, atop the non-descript Roe St carpark in Northbridge, Rooftop Movies blossoms into existence for a 6 month season. With its box office, bar and projection booth housed in old caravans, its fake turf and deck chairs, and its big screen laid across two sea containers, the whole arrangement feels like a clandestine cinematic set up; a secret retreat for the film-loving public’, says Perth Culture’s Laurence Watts. ‘But, the event is no word-of-mouth affair. In less than 4 years, Rooftop Movies has quickly become one of the mainstays of Perth’s Cultural Calendar, its greatly varied programme attracting cinephiles and average citizens, alike.’

Along with a great night out comes a contribution to another Perth mainstay; ‘all of the profits from Rooftop Movies go towards enabling us to present the annual FRINGE WORLD Festival. Every ticket sold enables us to achieve a massive positive impact for WA culture and community’
