History of #Hashtags [Infographic]

Meg Coffey // 02nd December 2013

In just 6 years hashtags have evolved from a simple symbol to one of today’s most valuable marketing tools. Twitter transformed the # symbol from the humble pound sign to a hyperlinked verb. Today it serves as a social media shorthand for message targeting and optimization.

And it doesn’t stop there. Hashtags have integrated the lives of every day people, every day. Twitter played a role in the civil runrest of the Arab Spring with #Bahrain becoming one of the most-used hashtags of all time.

The ultimate sign that the hashtag is here to stay? Facebook began supporting hashtags in June 2013. Oh and there was that hilarious little video from Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

For marketers, the hashtag’s short, but rich history proves its ability to attract attention and build conversations around your message. Check out this great infographic from Offerpop on the history of hashtags…
