Time to say goodbye

Farewell #SMPerth, It has been my pleasure.

For the past 7 months I have been an Intern at #SMPerth. During this time, I have authored a fortnightly blog related to all things social and digital media.

I’ve covered a lot of ground. I’ve discussed a wide range of topics, The Rock becoming President of The United States, VR headsets, social media fails and the future of Facebook to name a few of my favourite Intern-al blogs. Things change quickly! Not only in the digital landscape, but also in life. With fond memories, and a hint of sadness I will be departing as an intern at #SMPerth since I have gained full-time employment at The Story Lab and have just about wrapped up my degree at Murdoch University.

I remember the first #SMPerth Drinks I attended. I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I didn’t know anyone. But by the end of the night I felt quite at ease, which is a testament to the #SMPerth community that has been built in this little ol’ town. Over the next events I attended I began to recognise familiar faces and the nerves went away. And in case you haven’t heard, there are some big things in store over the next year.

I would like to offer a huge thanks to my favourite Texstralian Meg for kick-starting my career in social media. She has given me freedom to flex my creative skills and offered me quality guidance along the way. She took a chance on me and gave me an opportunity which have recently opened a lot of doors for me.  This is something that I will always be grateful for, and I will always feel connected to the #SMPerth community. She is one of the best in the business and it is easy to see why she is such a respected social media expert.

As to where I think Social media and digital media is heading. Snapchat will fall, Trump will continue to give us unbelievable content, and Zuckerberg will grow his monopoly. But we all know what, right?

All Trump jokes aside, I believe video across all platforms will continue its exuberant growth. It is the most engaging form of content and offers some of the most in-depth insights.

If I could be so bold as to offer some advice to current/future students looking to work in social media – Read! Listen! Repeat! Become a sponge and try to absorb as much information from people who know far more than you do.  During our first meeting I remember Meg saying “I am flexible. But if you say you are going to do something, I expect it to get done”.

Do that and I’m sure you will be fine.

Oh, and if you want to be the next intern – apply here!

Well folks, that just about wraps it up. It’s been a lot of fun.

See you at the next #SMPerth drinks.
