If you already work in SEO, you’ve probably got a suite of tools that you work with regularly.

But if you’re a business owner who wants to do your SEO in house, and haven’t got a clue where to start, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most useful SEO tools around today.

Here are 10 SEO tools that marketers should be using in 2017.

Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog, aside from having one of the best SEO tool names ever, is one of the best website crawlers available. If you don’t have a big budget for SEO tools, and your site is on the smaller end of the scale, Screaming Frog will give you heaps of data on the backend of your website.

It will show you what your title tags and meta descriptions for each page are, flag if you have any error pages and also show you what your H1s and H2s currently look like to Google.

Open Site Explorer (Moz)

The Open Site Explorer tool from Moz is a must have in your SEO toolkit. Enter any URL and it will show you what links that URL has pointing at it.

It’s great for checking for harmful backlinks as well as doing competitor research and seeing what websites are linking to your competitors.

SEMRush

While most value from SEM Rush can be found in the paid version, there are enough stats and features in their free account option to make this a valuable SEO tool to add to your collection.

It’s got one of the most accurate rank tracking tools and allows up to 10 keywords to be tracked on a free account.

Google Search Console

Completely free and talks directly to Google – if you aren’t using Google Search Console, get on it now! One of the key things you can use it for is to submit a sitemap and tell Google exactly what pages you have on your website.

If you add new pages and don’t want to wait for Google to discover it, you can also use Search Console to request indexing of the new page/s – super handy tool!

Google Analytics

Having a website and not installing Google Analytics on it is akin to opening a shop and not keeping track of how many customers you have and what they buy. You just wouldn’t do that, so why treat your website like that?

Google Analytics is crucial to any SEO strategy as it helps you to see who comes to your website, what pages they visit, what they purchase/download, where they are from, how old they are and so much more.

MozCast

If you want to keep an eye on the SEO weather in the world, MozCast is where you need to head. The hotter the temperature, the more turbulent the Google algorithm updates on the day.

Test My Site

This tool from Think With Google allows you to test your mobile site speed and suggests improvements that you can make to speed up your mobile site.

Google Suggest

Using the Google search bar can be used as an SEO tool in itself. Simply start typing a phrase into the search bar and see what appears in the drop down menu as suggestions from Google. These are usually phrases which are commonly searched for or that are trending at the moment.

It was reportedly retired a few years ago but still continues to show suggestions when you type so check out what is commonly searched and think about creating content around these phrases where relevant to your business.

Yoast SEO

If you’ve got a WordPress website, Yoast SEO is an essential plugin if you’re serious about your SEO. It not only allows you to add SEO elements like title tags and meta descriptions but also set focus keywords, help you with readability, and create a sitemap for your website.

SEO Quake

SEO Quake is an awesome browser extension that allows you to quickly see details about a website or URL. It works on the search engine results page or on any website URL as well. See how many backlinks a page has, how many referring domains it has, what countries link the most, how old the website it, and even how many keywords it appears for in the search engine results page. Some of these stats need to be connected to an SEM Rush account to work.
