You really have to be on the ball if you want to keep up-to-date with all the new features to social media platforms.
Instagram features are no different. The social media giant is constantly updating the app to please their almost 1 billion users.
Lucky for you, we have compiled a list of all the important Instagram features that you need to know about.
82% of audiences prefer live video from a brand compared to social posts. So, how does Live Video work for Instagram?
- Followers will get a notification telling them you are going live
- Followers can comment on or like your Live Video in real time
- After you end your video it is gone. The video doesn’t save to your account.

Live Video is a great opportunity for your brand to build authenticity with your followers.
Instagram Stories has seen huge growth in the last year. From October 2017 to June 2018 there has been an increase of 100 million active Instagram Stories users, going from 300 million to 400 million.
Stories are shown as small circles in the top of your followers’ feeds.
You can watch Story content as many times as you wish within a 24-hour period of the content being posted. After 24-hours the content disappears.
Features of Instagram Stories include:
- Video recording up to 15 seconds
- Image viewing up to 10 seconds
- Unlimited story additions
- Direct messaging
- Swipe up on the camera screen to access photos from your camera roll to add to your story
- See who views your story

Push Notifications for favourite accounts
You can choose to receive a notification when your favourite accounts post content.
- Go to the profile you want to turn on notifications for.
- Select the three dots (top right of screen)
- Select Turn on Post Notifications or Turn on Story Notifications.
Tip: Ask your followers to turn on push notifications for your account. It’s a great way to keep your customers returning to your page.
Instagram TV is a new addition to Instagram. It allows users to share videos up to an hour long.
This feature is great for users who tend to rely more on video content to reach their audience.
Access IGTV by clicking on the icon at the top right of your screen
There are a bunch of cool features you can choose to add to your Instagram Story – the poll is one of the best.
You can type a question and ask your users to vote on it.
This is another great way to build relationships with your followers and build authenticity.
Once you have a photo or video to add to your story, click on the sticker icon at the top of the screen.
Did you know there is 40 Instagram Filters to choose from? When trying to curate a beautiful Insta feed you should be sticking to one or two filters so you maintain consistency.
You can select which filters you want to show on your account.
To do this > Select a photo to upload > Scroll left until you reach the end of your Filters > Select Manage Filters.
From here you can select or deselect filters. It is recommended to do this if you want to have a consistent feed. By only having a few filters available to choose from you will be less likely to forget what filter to use.
You can now Mute accounts – Hooray! This means you can choose not to see a users content without unfollowing them.
Just go to the profile you want to mute > click on the three dots in the top right of the screen > select Mute.
Turn existing Posts into Ads
If you have an organic post that is crushing it, you can now turn it into an ad. This never used to be an option until just recently.
