Let’s be honest, the SMPerth community is a pretty awesome bunch!

Each fortnight we’re bringing you ‘5 Minutes with’ some of our top members, and this week we caught up with Carma Levene, who holds the title of attending every single SMPerth event since its inception!

Carma has found her place in the digital sphere as a freelance Social Media Specialist, and has earned a strong reputation amongst her diverse pool of clients for delivering solid results, as well as a ton of enthusiasm! Be sure to check out her blog at carma.social to learn more about her exciting journey in the digital marketing world.

Favourite drink?

You’re going to have to narrow it down…I’ll make a short list! In no particular order:
·  Coffee      ·  Tea & herbal teas
·  Wine         ·  Tequila
·  Bubbles    ·  Cider
·  Ginger beer

Favourite platform and why?

My personal favourite Social Media platform? Tough one. I would have said Twitter…but it might be Instagram now. For business objectives Facebook all the way though.

Prediction for what’s hot in digital marketing in the next 6 months?

Video (both live and stop-motion/animation) and Bots.

People want real-time, real life – which they get from live streaming. And platforms keep getting better at ways to promote, store, embed and protect video. Plus the stop motion ones of food and cocktail recipes are the BEST. Check out Buzzfeed’s Nifty if you want an example. I mean, I have no idea what I would do with magnetic goo…but this video makes me feel like I need some anyway.

Bots, because customer service on Social can get really hard at scale. If you have a small to medium-sized business, the amount of queries, complaints, and feedback via comments, messages, and email can be completely overwhelming.

Bots can handle some of the easier questions, and free you up to do the million other things needed to keep your business running smoothly.

What digital marketing trend do you think is totally overrated?

It’s not a marketing trend, but I can’t stand people taking screen shots of one of their posts on a social channel and posting on another platform.

To answer your question, the marketing trends that need to stop are:

· Using likes as a valid metric
· Confusing and bamboozling your clients with buzzwords
· Auto follow messages – they are bad enough on Twitter, why are they now on Instagram?

Remember back to your first day at work, what would you tell yourself to keep in mind?

I could go back and talk to my 16 year old self I’d tell her to not worry so much about the opinions of other people. Keep learning, keep improving and keep working at living the type of life you want. The rest will take care of itself.

Oh, and I’d tell her to start a foodie blog 😉
