Name: Owen Charles Johnstone
Job Description: #SMPerth Intern
Owen loves meeting and talking to new people, it’s no wonder he found his home in marketing and public relations. Owen is a recent PR & marketing graduate from Curtin University.
While originally beginning his university career studying applied geology, Owen’s love of people and public speaking quickly drew him to public relations and marketing (he still knows a lot about rocks though). Here, he found his true calling and threw himself into the degree as much as possible, joining the Public Relations Student Committee and volunteering at media events like the 2018 Oasis Campaign Brief Awards.
Owen is a massive sports fanatic, he can talk to anyone about any sport, be it AFL, NHL, NBA, darts or even Esports and will defy anyone who besmirches the name of the great Philadelphia 76’s (trust the process). He has also combined this love with marketing, having worked on the 2016 National University Games, 2017 Western Australian University Games, and is now a marketing & media assistant at Peel Thunder Football Club.
A passion project of Owen’s is working to raise awareness about mental health among young people, especially when it comes to young men. During his time on the PR student committee he worked with the charity Zero2Hero to host an event to raise awareness about the services they offer to students and other young people. This work has continued into his work at Peel Thunder and their “Outside The Locker Room” program which offers counselling and support to players and associated members of the club.
When it comes to social media Owen consumes everything video related as fast as possible. With the ever growing 30 second attention span mentality, video is one of the most effective and engaging ways to draw people in- what is better than a cat video? Nothing that’s what! Completely self taught, Owen now writes, shoots and edits interviews on a regular basis for his other endeavours (a process that is the literal embodiment of the phrase “practice makes perfect”). Hopefully you’ll be able to see some of his video work on the #SMPerth site soon!
Owen is extremely excited about being part of the SMPerth family and encourages you to come talk to him whenever you are at the next event.
