LinkedIn hashtags can work really well if you have a solid strategy in place.
With the proper use of LinkedIn hashtags, you can increase your profile exposure, create stronger connections and get your content seen by a larger audience.
In this article, we’ll show you how to develop a strategy to successfully use LinkedIn hashtags with your profile.
LinkedIn makes it easy to use Hashtags
On the left-hand side of your LinkedIn feed, you will notice the Your Communities section.
This section lets you manage the use of hashtags and join conversations more easily. To begin adding hashtags, click on the pencil icon.
You can pin your favourite hashtags to appear first on your profile for easy access.
If you click on Discover More you will be shown a list of hashtags that might be of interest to you. This option also shows you the number of followers for a specific hashtag. The number of followers can give you some insight into whether or not you should use that hashtag in your profile.
What hashtags should you use?
Before adding hashtags to your posts, you want to find hashtags that suit your profile and the interests of your desired audience.
A good way to do this is to create a list of hashtags being used by popular influencers in your area of work. For inspiration, check out our recent post on social marketers you should follow on LinkedIn.
Using the correct hashtags categorises and filters your content so it’s easily accessible for people interested in a particular topic.
For example, in a recent post for #SMPerth, I used the hashtags #social media, #UGC, #digitalmarketing, and #marketing.
This makes my content more visible to users who don’t follow my profile. It also categorises my post with other similar content – creating the opportunity for new connections.

You can search hashtags by different categories including people, groups or content.
To do this, click in the search bar and select from the drop-down options.
You can then see the results of people who have used a particular hashtag in their profile. Keep a lookout for what profiles get great engagement and add those hashtags to your list.
RiteTag is a free app that can give you suggested hashtags for keywords. It’s important to note that the program only suggests hashtags for Instagram and Twitter, but if you’re having trouble finding hashtags it can provide some help.
Enter a topic into the search bar and it will display a list of popular hashtags.
Your hashtag list
Make sure you keep a list of all the hashtags you have found to be successful. There is nothing worse than having a complete mind blank when it comes time to post your new piece of content.
Google Docs is a great tool that allows you to keep track of your hashtags across any device.
Now that you have compiled your list of hashtags you can begin using them appropriately across LinkedIn.
When creating a new post or article, LinkedIn will automatically suggest hashtags for you. You can choose from this list or add your own.
Make sure you don’t stuff your post with useless hashtags. Remember to stick to your strategic list of hashtags!
